Cholesterol management can be a major concern for people suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD). This is why nutritionist and author Dr. Shawn Talbott, and alternative health expert Dr. Bryce Wylde, are excited to share news that tocotrienols from Malaysian Palm Fruit Oil may help these patients improve their lipid profiles.
Talbott and Wylde attended Wayne State University researcher Dr. Pramod Khosla’s presentation during the recent Palm Oil Health Week. Entitled “A Tocotrienol-Rich Supplement Improves Lipid Profiles in Chronic Hemodialysis Patients But Does Not Affect Inflammatory Markers,” it was a highlight of the event sponsored by The Malaysian Palm Oil Council.
The kidneys are responsible for sifting waste and toxins from the body. CKD “impairs filtration of toxins (cytokines/free radicals),” clarified Talbott, “which build up and lead to problems.” These can include high levels of cellular oxidation, inflammatory tissue damage, lowered HDL (“good” cholesterol) and higher LDL (“bad” cholesterol).
Tocotrienol supplementation may be a beneficial addition to statin drugs. “Tocotrienols suppress HMG-CoA reductase or lower cholesterol synergistically with lovastatin,” Talbott continued, impressed because this means that “they may help lower cholesterol production in ways that not even statin drugs do.”
For those diagnosed with CKD who participated in research studies “tocotrienol supplementation also reduced the number of hospitalized days,” he added, “suggesting improved general health and wellness.”
For Wylde, this information underlined the importance of “a balanced diet, including complex carbs with a variety of fats, including some saturated.” Because we “need to focus on individual differences when it comes to [processing] enzymes,” there is no single answer. Treating people as unique, rather than recommending a go-to solution, could have many implications for the medical, nutritional and scientific communities.
Dr. Khosla pointed out that new discoveries challenge our understanding of healthy and unhealthy fats. He encourages everyone to stay informed because what we know about proper nutrition is constantly changing. He also reminded the attendees that palm fruit oil is cholesterol neutral, thanks to its unique lipid profile.
